Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) is an inflammatory response which manifests as “razor or shaving bumps”. It is the body’s response to curly hair which, after being shaved, re-enters the skin. The involved area has bumps and sometimes darkening of the skin. It may be also associated with keloid formation. It is more common in African- American and Hispanic men, and in some women. It can occur anywhere, but is common on the face, neck and bikini areas.
The Cynosure Apogee Elite laser can be used to disable the hairs that are causing this condition, and thus resulting in an improvement in the condition. Frequently, an improvement in the discoloration is also seen after treatment.
